Civil services examination(CSE), commonly known as IAS exam or UPSC exam is India’s most prestigious examination. By clearing this exam, you will achieve a career in bureaucracy/administration of India, and henceforth be called a Bureaucrat or Administrator or an IAS Officer (Indian Administrative Services). 

“IAS” is actually an elite and most preferred “post” achieved by top rankers of this exam. One may also choose other posts like IPS(Indian Police Service), IRS(Indian Revenue Service), IFS(Indian Foreign Service) and so on. The post achieved by an aspirant depends upon his/her rank and the personal preference order filled in the form.

Union Public Service Commission, commonly abbreviated as UPSC, is a government body which conducts the civil services/IAS exam every year. Thus the exam is also called the UPSC exam.

 “Any” person with general awareness of India and the world can become an IAS officer. He/she needs to prepare smartly and secure a rank in the list.

 NO. Any student from any stream(Arts, Science, Law, Commerce, Medical, Engineering) can prepare and crack the IAS exam. UPSC has created a level playing field by asking mixed questions from the basic subjects which students study from classes 6th to class 12th.

Questions may be asked from subjects like History, Geography, Environmental studies, Polity, Science and Technology, Maths, Reasoning, Aptitude, English Comprehension, Moral studies, Ethics. Students are well aware of these subjects since class 6th school days. 

 We strongly recommend that a student should start preparing for IAS as early as possible, as early as class 8th. Even managing 2 hours a week till class 12th is sufficient to make a solid foundation to appear in the exam after graduation. Youngest IAS officers make it to the highest posts in their career and retire as the most eminent IAS officers. We, at our institution have students from class 8th to phd. level!

NO. You can prepare young, right from school level, but will be eligible to write the exam only after graduation.

 NO. Although the basics subjects are similar, yet IAS exam preparation demands a different approach. Since the IAS syllabus is vast, one needs to know what to study and what not to study! Linkage with the newspapers and current affairs is important too. The focus is more on conceptual clarity, and not on rote learning.

 It is the biggest myth that toppers make it to the UPSC list. Not your marks alone, but your ideas, personality, character, discipline and smart work matters. Proper guidance is the key. A university topper, may waste his/her talent by not clearing the exam due to lack of guidance. Whereas, an average student with 45% marks in university may clear the IAS exam with proper planning and guidance.

 It depends upon one’s perspective and attitude. A rickshaw puller does more hard work, Bill Gates does more smart work. Nothing is impossible if you are determined and smartly guided! 

It is yet another myth that you must have a rich, elite, educated, urban family background to become an IAS officer. We have guided the poorest of the poor candidates, from rural and tribal backgrounds, uneducated families. The only thing needed is a positive attitude and a resolve to do it!

YES! Reading at least 1 good quality newspaper everyday is the most important part of IAS preparation. One needs to analyse events and develop a rational viewpoint of the current events happening in our country and around. Eg – war with pakistan, or farmers protest, or launching of Chandrayaan by ISRO…
